Before and After: A Designer’s Own Modernist Renovation from a Purist Perspective

This engaging talk takes audiences behind the scenes of a remarkable Midcentury Modern renovation, exploring the philosophy, process, and design decisions that shaped the transformation of a 1972 Richard A. Harrison residence in the architecturally significant Seven Lakes Golf & Country Club.

Presented by owner, interior designer, preservationist and Modernism Week Board Member Annalisa Capurro, the talk offers a professional insider’s view of how a once neglected 2,450 sq ft home was meticulously revived while honoring its original architectural and design intent. Annalisa will share the history of Seven Lakes, accompanied by archival images, before guiding the audience through the home’s renovation–from its “full of potential” beginnings to its striking transformation—illustrated with dramatic before-and-after photography.

Guided by a purist perspective, the renovation preserves the home’s modernist DNA—clean lines, open volumes, a seamless inside–outside connection, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s concept of “compression and release”—while integrating natural, textured finishes, references to its lost 1970s glamour, and contemporary conveniences. The talk examines key challenges, including how a designer with unlimited access to materials makes disciplined selections, balancing original elements with essential upgrades, and sourcing period-appropriate materials, lighting and furnishings.

Attendees will gain insight into curating an authentic Midcentury Modern inspired interior, featuring authentic vintage furniture and lighting by modernist greats including Warren Platner, Pierre Paulin, Gaetano Sciolari, George Nelson, Harry Bertoia, and Ray and Charles Eames, alongside artworks by Stan Bitters, Josef Albers, Charles Livier, and other notable artists. More than a renovation, this is a personal story of celebrating modernist heritage—respecting the past while embracing the present and inspiring a deeper appreciation for timeless midcentury Modern design.

This lecture pairs perfectly with the accompanying Interior Design Spotlight Tour: Inside the Designer’s Home, offering attendees the opportunity to experience the renovation firsthand.
